For Hobbyist Only!!, June 4, 2015

This review is from: Leica V-Lux (Typ 114) 20 Megapixel Digital Camera with 3-Inch LCD (18194) (Electronics)
Any photographers reviewing this camera as 4 or 5 stars do not sell their images for a living..If you are on a budget buy the Panasonic FZ 1000, it’s the same camera for $500 less. I have used this camera for about 2 months under all conditions, from weddings to surf photography. This is a great travel camera and that should be the reason to buy it; and by the way, the weather should not include rain or snow on your travels. This camera is not weather resistant, even to fog since the lens retracts back into the camera body. The body fits great in your hand but it still feels like plastic. It is great for portraits and will ,manually, high speed sync with your $100 Yongnuo 568 flash or TTL with High Speed Sync with a $150 Metz Mecablitz Flash. I use Sony A7’s for my professional work and the EVF on this Leica does not come close to the Sony EVF, even with the same resolution; however, if you have never had a EVF you will be pleased with it. You cannot manually focus the lens in a professional situation due to it being electronic and the lag is way too slow. It advertises as 12 FPS continuous; however that is misleading because it only shoots 12 FPS with single focus turned on. In Cont Focus it shoots about 4- 5 FPS. The 50 FPS is single focus at 8MP and your are better off pulling 8mp stills off the 4K because the IS is deactivated and all photos that I have taken at this speed suck. The lens is only sharp up to about it’s 200mm equivalent, after that it is very soft and the shadows unusable. It does not help to stop it down. It’s only 2.8 at 25mm! and then goes to 3.5. At about 170mm you reach 4.0. You cannot crop a 300 or 400 image at all, it just looks like crap. The buffer is terrible. It only takes about 12 JPEG/RAW images before the buffer fill up on a fast SDHC card. and then takes a minute to clear the buffer. So what good is the 12 fps??? With the 4K video you have no control over aperture or shutter speed so you have no chance at being creative with it. This is a nice travel camera for a hobbyist willing to work within it’s constraints.

Mr. Andreas Kaufmann said that he would double the sales at Leica. With cameras introduced like this he will triple the sales. What a kick ass camera for $1,300. A 20 meg super zoom camera with 87 MEGS built in, large 1″ MOS sensor, 4K video, Electronic Image Stabilization, HDMI, NFC and Wi-Fi. 25 to 400mm Leica DC Vario-Elmarit with 50fps. This is tweaked and rebranded current Japanese Tech with German Specs and Optics with a 3 year warranty. Marketing Genius. Steve Jobs when he first introduced the I-phone said that it was designed like a Leica Camera. This camera is well designed. The top of its class. The 18194 priced in this range will move the price down on all the other used V-Lux models 1 to 4.

Can’t beat it for the price, December 29, 2014

I have several cameras and a small fortune in lenses for those cameras.

This is, by far, my favorite. I have taken professional photographs with this camera many times. It’s clarity and depth of colors cannot be beat.

Once upon a time, I used to take the tripod, camera bag with multiple cameras and assorted lenses. I still take those to make it look good, but this is my preferred camera.

In this day and age of seemingly everyone having a camera with their phones, so many bad or mediocre pictures are being taken. Once folks see the pics taken with this camera, they will want copies and hire you for their next event.
