Excellent PC monitor with excellent blacks for LED, October 24, 2015

This review is from: Samsung UN40JU6500 40-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2015 Model) (Electronics)
I bought the 40″ model from a local vendor because of a special promotion. Normally, I would have bought here, but the deal worked to my favor. Now, I did my homework on this one…. I was debating between the LG 2k and 4k OLED displays, perfectly willing to spend the 1700-3000 for a display that would work as both a semi-pro production color grading monitor and a day-to-day computer display. The display I was looking for was intended to be mounted on the wall above the artist working on content and fed a 1080 4:4:4: signal to monitor video editing, color grading and occasional usage as a 2nd monitor. After exhaustive investigation, I could not settle on OLED because of the burn in issues, worried that my artists would spend too much time watching youtube or leaving some file browser window open and cause permanent damage to the display. So I went in search of an led display. I figured, if I am not getting OLED, I must at least get 4k… so I settled on on the Samsung 7100 series, which was rated as one of the best 4k led displays on the market. So, I went to the store and took a look for myself. 1 hour later, I walked out with the less rated 6500 series… why, because I could not tell the difference. I am a pro, 20 years in the videography/cg business, and I could not tell the difference. Once I got it home, in my very dark studio, I calibrated it, watched movies in 1080p and 4k, worked a bit on my computer with it, and without a doubt am quite pleased that I did not get the OLED or 7100 series. I am a value buyer, I want the best quality for the best value. And if this LED is good enough for me to provide my artists, then it is perfectly more than suitable for you. Read the reviews, make sure you understand what you are getting. For my purposes as a production review monitor and a computer monitor for content creation, it is an excellent value.

Review Updated for Clarity — This review is for both the 40″ and 55″ Model:

    UN40JU6500 [5 Stars] Review:

I haven’t been impressed with “Flatscreen” displays since my SONY SXRD 55 LCOS TV. That changed with the Samsung UN40JU6500.

The Samsung UN40JU6500 is an excellent buy based on picture quality, inputs and functionality.

I currently have it hooked up to a
    1. Sony Bluray player
    2. Desktop (input 1 / STB with UHD color on, 4K at 60P w/ EVGA 960 http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Perfect-Graphics-04G-P4-1962-KR/dp/B012NOWEY0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1445561470&sr=8-5&keywords=evga+960 )
    3. Laptop (4K at 30P, Input 2)
    4. Setup to playback videos over DNLA and some videos using one of the USB hubs (also connected via Ethernet.)

Please note, for the above Desktop/Laptop, you can only get UHD color on Input 1/STB, and also please set to Device Type “PC”, which clears up any color/fuzzy display issues when connected to a PC/Laptop.

I haven’t tried everything this TV offers, but everything I have tried has been excellent, including up scaling.

AC WIFI: Works great with TWC/Netflix/Amazon — I have it connected to a Netgear Nighthawk R8000. But I still prefer Ethernet, so I turned that off, but may use it if need be, so it’s a great to have.

Backlight: Perfect! I have mine at 12 and black is black! Yay!! ( I will say one important thing that held me from buying last year’s 4K models was that they all suffered from back light issues, from cloudy/dark corners/all around the sides….this one is nearly flawless. Yes, you can see some barely visible shadows around the screen frame, but it’s really, really barely noticeable, unlike previous models. If you’re on the fence on this model, take the jump and buy it, it’s a great value, esp. when on sale.

From the apps I’ve tried, they all work fine, including Netflix, Amazon and Youtube. My favorite is TWC App (Time Warner Cable) which helped me get rid of the cable set-top box and save me $15 a month.

The only con I have for it is the remote, I really wish it had dedicated buttons for sources…I checked the manual for programming the A/B/C/D buttons to do so, but haven’t found it. Currently, you’ll have to choose “Source”->and use the left/right arrows to choose a source.

UN55JU6500 [1 Star – Version EH02, Made In Mexico.] Review:

I’ve updated my review to 3 stars because of the UN55JU6500. I recently got it and will keep it only because of significant discount I got from another re-seller. The 55″ inch version of this TV [UN55JU6500] has a lot back light bleeding and off angle viewing is very poor (when viewing the screen up/down or on the left/right side) the screen appears to wash out, it becomes lighter where it looks like someone put a thin transparent white film over the screen / hazy white. You wont notice this in the store, but you will when you get it home. For testing, hook it up to a computer via HDMI and run the blank screen saver (or change your desktop background to a solid black color) to see how bad the back light bleed is and set the back light value to at least 10 (out of 20.) You also see how “dirty” your screen is by setting your background to light gray. Also, for the off axis viewing, you can use the blank screen saver / black desktop background, and you’ll notice half of the screen becoming light gray.

It’s 2015 and Samsung still hasn’t figured out how to prevent back light bleeding? Who cares about 4K resolution, Smart TV and all the other stuff if they can’t get a black screen to be black. Sad. This shouldn’t even be a QA / batch issue, these panels should be designed in a way that even if a monkey put them together, they wouldn’t have the light bleed problem. You got it right on the 40″, why is the 55″ such a problem to get it right?

Moving on to viewing angles, why are you still manufacturing inferior panel technology? I assume this is not even a MVA panel, but some inferior derivative? I wish it was at least a VA/MVA or even better, Super PLS, Samsung’s own technology competing with IPS (Hitachi)

The 40″ will be my last “LED” TV. I never had these issues with my CCFL 55″ Bravia TV’s, only LEDs that are Edge Lit (Very hard to find a very good Direct Lit with Local Dimming Panel at an affordable price.) I’ll wait for the next tech to come along.

In sum, the 40″ [UN40JU6500] is a winner, and it’s looks like from other reviews, so is the 48″, but anything bigger may have this problem, and I can definitely confirm the back light problem on the 55″ I’ll upload photos tonight.

    UPDATE 2: 10/20/2015
I’ve decided to give the UN55JU6500 one more chance with an exchange only because of the discount I got on the unit. On my current UN55JU6500 model, the backlight…

How To Get Rid of The SOAP OPERA EFFECT and enjoy this beautiful 4K TV… :-), December 2, 2015
    By
    Steven Wolff (Vancouver, WA) –

Disclaimer: I bought this TV at BestBuy only because it was five minutes away and Amazon/Best Buy price match. That said…

This is a beautiful TV and recently I learned that the “too real” look can be fixed!!! It’s called the Soap Opera Effect and there’s lots of videos on Youtube if you use that word in the search bar. However, I’m going to save you time by saying it comes down to adjusting the judder setting. Here’s how you do it…

Click on Picture> Picture Options> Scoll down to Auto Motion Plus>Click Custom.
You should see a slider bar called JUDDER. Scroll to 0 (Zero) and you have a standard TV look. Scroll to 10 (Ten) and you have the Soap Opera Effect (everything looks like behind the scenes on a set.) ~ The closer you are to zero, the lesser the SOE. For me, a nice balance is 5 on this TV, but adjust it to your liking. :-)

Back to my review: Now that’s out of the way, I like how Netflix, Youtube, and other stations can come up quickly. It has a quad-core processor and is very responsive to me. It transitions easily from cable to my PS4 to Netflix, depending on which HDMI I want. Folks, keep in mind – this is a 4K TV… most of these cost several thousand dollars. In five years or so, they will only be a few hundred bucks. This price point of $599 for a 48″ as of this posting – is one hella of a deal. Can’t go wrong – go ahead and buy it!

Good price, but features are hit-and-miss, November 10, 2015
    By

For an inexpensive 4K TV, this isn’t too bad, but there are some issues. The picture is sharp, motion is smooth, and colors pop very nicely. However, it’s rather obvious that Samsung cut some corners to hit this price point. The smart features are nice, but the processor is woefully underpowered to handle basic tasks. It is nice that Samsung included a built-in channel guide for users who watch over-the-air broadcast, but the lag is terrible when scrolling through the guide. Like many modern channel guides, you get a quarter-screen-size picture of the channel you are currently watching and the rest of the screen is taken up by the guide. For whatever reason though, when you scroll through the guide both the guide and the channel you are watching completely stop while the next page takes up to five seconds to load. It’s disappointing that this TV can flawlessly stream 4K content, yet can’t seem to handle flipping through pages of a channel guide. Regardless, since I consider a channel guide to be icing on the cake and not a core feature, I can overlook that easily. What is harder to overlook is the inconsistent backlight performance. During dark scenes or when watching a program with letterboxes on the top and bottom, there is a very distracting light blob in the bottom center of my screen. This can be fixed somewhat by turning the backlight way down, but the resulting picture is so dim it’s hardly worth it. We actually traded in a similarly-priced 2014 Samsung model for this one because it too had backlight problems. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem with at least their lower-end 4K televisions. Samsung also cut back on some features compared to last year’s equivalent model, too. You get fewer connections in the rear, and the remote no longer has light-up keys, which kind of stinks if you like to watch TV in the dark.

Overall, it’s a pretty good TV, but it has some noteworthy flaws. If you can stand a laggy interface and some pretty glaring inconsistencies in the black levels, it’s a good TV for the price. If you want a snappy interface and even black levels, look elsewhere.

Major Flashlighting and poor blacks…, November 27, 2015

I have always loved Samsung TVs but this one is horrible for any darker room or dark scenes… This picture was taken with the lights off and the lighting settings adjusted to a tolerable level just before the screen gets too dark. As you can see there’s major flashlighting and poor blacks, so much so I have to return my new 4K…
