THE BEBOP IS EASILY WORTH 5 STARS, May 14, 2015
    By
Amazon Customer (Layton, Utah United States) –

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
THE BEBOP IS EASILY WORTH 5 STARS, but not in it’s current condition – I will explain.

    Background:
I am not new to flying drones. My first drone was the DJI Phantom 2 vision plus – a much more delicate and breakable drone when crashed then the Bebop, but it is also bigger, a lot more powerful, takes better video quality, and originally costing about $400 to $500 more then the Bebop with a Skycontroller.

    Bebop Pros:
*The Bebop is very durable for a drone and can take a good amount of crashes without breaking parts. This is huge, because as a new drone pilot you will crash, period.- and probably quite a bit too. Where with other drones, like the Phantom 2 Vision plus, parts will break (like the gimbal) and camera and that alone costs, about $600. to replace.

*The Bebop’s video is extremely stable and sturdy without a gimbal. This is huge too. No moving parts, less things that will break when you crash. Video quality isn’t as good as say the Phantom 2 Vision plus, but it’s well worth the trade to have a very smooth video – and I prefer the Bebop’s technology for video stabilization then that of a gimbal.

*Drone is pretty small. Some might think this is a downsize, but I found it a lot more convenient then with my Phantom. It’s easy to carry from place to place. I have more confidence using this around my smaller kids, then I do with the larger Phantoms. It’s less spicuous to use when out in public and in parks.

*Skycontroller – The Skycontroller really is the only way to use the Bebop. It has decent distance and makes the Drone much easier to use.

    Cons – in this order:
*Price – This is the biggest concern.
With the introduction of DJI Phantom 3, they have set a new standard of quality and value for your money – like it or not. The Bebop with Skycontroller currently is $899.00. The Phantom 3 Advance is $999.00 and it is incredibly superior for only a $100.00 more. It’s like buying a Moped for $899.00 or buying a Ducati for $999.00. Are you getting it now?

    *Skycontroller Price.
The Bebop without the Skycontroller is really just a ridiculously over priced $500.00 toy.Sorry it’s true. Without the Skycontroller you don’t have the range or distance to really use the drone seriously.. Again, think of buying a Corvette but then being told you can never leave the Cul-de-sac (dead end street) that you live on with the Corvette. Ya, it’s exactly like that. And if you want to buy the Skycontorller separately it’s $400 and stupendously expensive – so no win here.

    *Cheaply made
For $899.00 I’d expect Parrot to make the Bebop drone feel like I was getting a block of gold, yet instead what I got feels very cheaply made as others have stated. 2 rubber landing gear lost on it’s maiden flight. People have complained about this from the beginning and Parrot has done nothing to fix the wrong, at least with DJI, they came out with several versions of the Phantom 2 Vision Plus, in trying to correct problems and make a better drone, but not here with the Bebop. The battery connections has to be held on with a $0.25 Velcro strap. REALLY??? A $900.00 package and I am holding the battery to my Drone with a $0.25 Velcro strap. I would of respected Parrot more if they included a role of duct-tape, but then again that cost more then $0.25 and the price of the drone might of gone up another $50 bucks.

    *Lastly Flight time.
With the stock batteries you’re lucky if get 7 to 11 minutes of flight time. I’m sorry, $900.00 not acceptable for the price when Phantoms are hitting 16 to 20 minute flight times and the Yuneec Q500+ (you can now get at $999.00) can do 25 minutes of flight time. 7 minutes, 10 minutes, really not enough time to set shots you want to take video of and or pictures. It’s just ridiculous .

Would I buy this product again? No, I just can’t for it’s price.
As much I like the Bebop and in many ways prefer it over DJI’s Phantoms for everyday flying and want to give it 5 stars, good common sense tells me, no way – just not worth the money. If the whole package, (Bebop and Skycontroller) was $500.00 I’d still think twice in light of the Phantom 3 Advance, but at least it would be at a price point enough to temp me if I really didn’t know any better and had no way of getting $1,000 to buy the more expensive drones. Remember, Moped or a Ducati. But then again, sometimes it just might still be worth the save $1000.00 for the Ducati then to buy a $500 Moped.

Personally, I would like to see what Parrot does with the next version of the Bebop. hopefully they will learn some lessons and, they will price more line with what they are offering in compareds to the competition and make the product with more quality so it can feel like a premium product for it’s price.

Major improvement , Very Versatile Qad, April 3, 2015
    By

The weather in the northeast US hasn’t been too good for flying but I’ve been able to fly my Bebop and Sky Controller for about two weeks now.

Packaging and Contents – The product is packaged very well and I had no issues with damage, not even a crease in the box.

    First Level of packaging
    • Bebop
    • Battery
    • Charger
    • USB cable
    • Prop removal tool
    • Charger adapters
    • Extra props

    Second Level of packaging
    • Sky controller
    • Two Batteries
    • 7” tablet insert
    • Sun Shade
    • Lanyard
    Setup
I’m an AR Drone 2.0 owner so I was familiar with the steps to connect and found this to be very simple and straight forward.
    1. Charge all batteries
    2. Download Free Flight 3 on your display device
    3. Run “Check for updates” in Free Flight app
    4. Attach Battery to Bebop
    5. Attach Battery to Sky Controller
    6. Insert Display (I used an iPad 2)
    7. Power on Bebop
    8. Power on Sky Controller
    9. Connect your display to the Sky Controller WiFi
    10. Connect Sky Controller to Bebop with WiFi Manager in Free Flight App

It connected the first time with no issues. I went through the settings in Free Flight and its very straight forward with no surprises. Went through the calibration which was very simple and intuitive.
    Maiden Flight
Indoor – I always like to maiden quads indoors whenever possible just in case of a fly away. Once I had all the animals and humans clear it was time for takeoff. Flattened my trim and one press of a button and I was hovering. I was very impressed with the amount of precise control I had using the Sky Controller. I was able to fly around the house flawless on the first flight and I’m by no means an expert. I wouldn’t recommend flying in a small area like a house using FPV because I did see a little bit of lag and when you’re in such tight quarters that lag will be the difference between crashing into the wall and going around it.
Outdoor – Weather broke a little and I have been waiting to get outside and really put this to the test. After successful connection of Sky Controller and Bebop I had to make settings changes to outdoor mode and I was ready. Take off was smooth and hovering was stable. GPS icon was green and WiFi signal was strong. I took it up to about 50 feet and it was amazing how much more control I had over my trusty AR Dorne 2. I figured what better time to test the ‘Return to Home” feature then now. I want to know I can trust it BEFORE I need it. I sent it out a few hundred feet away and about 100 feet up. Signal was still strong and I pressed the button hoping for the best. It rose up about 10 feet, turned toward me and flew back conservatively until it was hovering exactly over the take off point. I felt relieved to know I can rely on that feature. I got about 12 minutes of run time on my first outdoor flight so it was about what I expected.
I have since flown the Bebop for about 2 hours of flight time. I have put it threw some sketchy scenarios and it has always corrected itself and stabilized. Using the Sky Controller is a huge improvement over using my iPhone but I understand the convenience of using it. You get the best of both worlds.

    Things that can be improved
How the battery is held in seems like it could be improved upon. I would have thought it would “Click” into place but instead the strap holds it on. I also think that it should be easier to get videos and pictures off the drone like it was on the AR. It may be this way to minimize bandwidth used during flight. Either way its sure not a show stopper and doesn’t take much to plug it into a PC.

How high can you go?!, March 29, 2015
    By

    How high can you go?!

Have you ever had that feeling that a particular experience can’t be topped? Well I’ve had that feeling multiple times while piloting the Bebop with the skycontroller. All I can say is incredible.!

I’ve been a parrot pilot since 2012 and this company has never ceased to amaze me. The wealth of ideas that comes out of their lab is nothing short of amazing. Here are a few reasons why I make this claim:

    User friendly

Nothing is more frustrating than getting a new device and having to read an encyclopedia on how to use it. Right out the box, the Bebop is read to go, but don’t let the smooth taste fool you. The technology packed into this drone is so versatile that it never makes you feel like its too simple or complex to use, which is another reason why I say Parrot has some of the best minds working for them in the industry. The controls are very intuitive and give you 3 modes of operation like: Ace, Normal, and joy pad.

Ace: allows you to control the Bebop with one finger (pretty cool)
Normal: Lets you move the Bebop Drone with the accelerometer and turn with the joystick (default control)
joy pad: disables the use of the accelerometer and allows you to take snapshots and record videos of the Bebop Drone in action with your device’s camera.

    Design

This drone speaks for itself as soon as you turn it on, it’s like powering up a fighter jet (never fired up a real fighter jet before, but I bet this is how it is), it has a fan for the onboard processor to keep it cool. It’s amazing how much Parrot was able to incorporate into this gadget. I love the compact size of the drone as it makes it easy to pack in a small bag or backpack. Battery is very simple to attach and detach which complements the drones awesome form factor. I honestly can’t think of anyways they could improve on the design except making the battery back more flush with the drone when attached (see fig. 1)

    Flight

The part you all been waiting for; the flight. There is so much to say about flying this wonderful little tech, but for the sake of not boring you I will try to keep this section to the most important parts:

    • Take off is simple, as soon as you press the “Take Off” icon, the drone quickly launches and hovers over the area from where it took off. Also I would like to note that when you take off it starts a recording of it’s adventures automatically, so keep that in mind.
    • There is an awesome feature included on this drone that I am beginning to appreciate more and more each time I pilot it; GPS. The technical masterpiece not only has the ability to travel a great length but also has the ability to return to it’s starting location when commanded to. I would like to make mention that it doesn’t do exact landing location but definitely comes back to the location where it lifted off and hovers until you command the next step; very intuitive.
    • The skycontroller is awesome! I honestly couldn’t imagine flying this wonderful tech any other way, although you do have the ability to use smart devices that are compatible with the Parrot Freeflight software. The controls are precise and accurate and gives you so much control over how you want to pilot your drone. This addition to the Parrot drone experience was much needed and I am very happy that Parrot listened to the need of consumers. The controller gives you an estimated range of 2km (1.24mi)! Enough said…..

    Camera

I’m not going to spend much time on this topic because it really needs no commentary. The camera is amazing; everything from the quality to the range of control. At one point I started to wonder if the camera would ever stop panning. I love the fact that you can control the camera without ever adjusting the actual drone itself, what an intuitive feature. From what I hear, there aren’t any moving parts in the camera.

    Honest Opinions

I know it has been a what may seem like a total love affair for several paragraphs, but once you experience this amazing tech, you wouldn’t be able to blame me. I will however make know a few thoughts I have about the device, not deal breakers, but definitely areas that could use improvement:

    • When flying the drone way up in the atmosphere (seems like it anyway) I have experience disconnection from the skycontroller. Thankfully the drone just hovers in the sky, but I can’t help but wonder what if the controller never reconnected. Very scary thought for me, but to Parrots credit I haven’t had enough flight time to really test limits and different scenarios. For now I will play it safe
