Excellent Sound. Decent Active Noise Cancellation. (4+ Stars),
Many people expect active noise-cancellation to block out all exterior sounds, but that’s not what it does. When turned on, they emit a hiss at a particular frequency that cancels out engine whine, whether that whine is from a jet engine, fan, or any other constant high-pitch mechanical source. Frequent fliers in particular seek out good noise-cancellation — and it makes a huge difference in listening quality on flights. Until you experience the difference, you might not know how much engine noise interferes with listening. The only noise-cancellating over-ear headphones I’ve found to block out most ambient sounds as well has been a $300+ Bose set. This Noontec set cannot compete with the Bose, but it does much better than many others, including Panasonic.
I find the real upside of these headphones to be the sound quality — defined bass, crystal-clear highs, and great reproduction of everything in-between. These are the kind of headphones you use everyday and then take on your next trip.
Comfort: 5 stars. The ear pieces float to give a superior fit against your ears.
Sound Quality: 5 stars
Noise Cancellation, Tested with a Noisy Bathroom Fan: 4- stars. Some whine is still audible, although it is markedly reduced. Sound instantly becomes richer when turned on in noisy environment.
Build-Quality and Design: 4 stars In addition to the battery-door issue, the on/off switch can be difficult to toggle, although it is convenienty located on the right ear piece, on the battery cover.
These headphones come with two ribbon-style audio cables, one with microphone and one without. Kudos to Noontec for including both since in-line microphone cables generate cord noise. Since I usually do not use my headphones for phone conversation, I greatly appreciate Noontec’s attention to this detail. These headphones also come with two AAA batteries — always carry a spare set — and a zippered hard case.
Especially if you don’t want to pay sky-high prices, this Noontec set is a great choice as long as you understand what “noise cancelling” means. The headphones fold to a compact size to fit in the case, making them ideal for travel or just transporting to and from work. Although I cannot attest yet to the durability of these headphones, I have other Noontec sets that have stood up nicely — I expect the same from these. Note: I received a free sample for review.
