I bought the TV on June 26th, and there was a firmware update available that added the Netflix functionality. So all the people complaining about the firmware, it is now available. It’s a little hard to find in the menus, but if you do the manual update, it finds it.

It seems to be a great TV. The only problem I’m having is that the built-in apps (Vudu, Netflix, Hulu) all seem to have a forced motion smoothing (soap opera) effect that you can’t turn off. I adjusted all the settings to turn that effect off, and it’s off on my over-the-air TV and my PS4 and Roku. Blu-rays and everything look great. But if I use the built-in apps, it has the motion smoothing on.

Wouldn’t be an issue if I had 4K capable Netflix on my Roku or PS4, but for now can only stream 4K from the built-in Netflix app. Hopefully a future firmware update resolves this. Or I can eventually stream 4K from an external player.

All these bad reviews. Not needed. I have to say after a color calibration this set is fantastic.
The blacks are better then my last sharp and the LG plasma I had.
4k playback is awesome, no need for the motion 480 turn that off.
My direct TV service has never looked as good as it does now.
Spend the money or the time to calibrate it and you will be very happy

This is a review of the 70inch 70UC30U model. Got this TV from Sam’s Club a week ago. We got the 70UC30U model which is just the member’s club version of the 70UE30U. We also bought the display model, as an FYI, in case you think that effects any portion of my review. But I will say that there are no visible appearances of heavy wear and as far as I can tell it has about 2500 hours of display time on it and the picture quality looks phenomenal. We bought the display model at a price of $1187 which came with a 4 year extended warranty – a price point that couldn’t be passed up, but could also bias my review slightly with regards to perceived value of purchase.

A quick rundown of the pros and cons:
PROs: (1) great picture with decent backlighting; (2) upscaling works extremely well on anything 720 or higher; (3) refresh rate is terrific and the Aquamotion 480 (Sharp’s motion smoothing or soap-opera effect inducing artificial high refresh rate) works very well on live sports and other live tv.
CONs: (1) Android TV looks like it will be great – but it’s still very buggy; (2) native set sound quality isn’t very good; (3) contrast levels can be touchy and you’ll need to do some extensive calibration; (4) firmware updates are a mix of good and bad, the last one (12/29/2015) made my ARC unreliable [fortunately the optical audio out works fine]

Now a more detailed look. First, the picture quality. I can’t say enough about how good it is. As I mentioned, the contrast levels can be a bit wonky at first, and out of the box (I did a factory reset first thing) you’ll notice some issues. Of course most LED sets suffer from similar issues, and UHD vs OLED, OLED is going to be easier to set and show greater detail in contrast, but this set can be calibrated to a point that it is very, very close to what I would deem the best you can get, especially in low light settings. The set comes with a bunch of standard bells and whistles aimed at improving set quality, one being adaptive lighting – turn that off right away and adjust the backlighting manually. It scales -16 to +16, we went with +10. Basic picture control settings are (brightness, contrast, tint, color, sharpness) are all on a main menu, easily accessible, but not one button press away. There are 5 different presets, and 4 of them are programable in both standard and advanced settings (including refresh rate/Aqumotion setting, and film motion smoothing).

Refresh rate – its a standard UHD 120Hz with an artificial upticking to 480Hz (the UH model goes up to 960 which is obviously better, but not noticeably so to me). You have four options with this: Off, 120 low, 120 high, and Aquamotion 480. You also have the film motion smoothing which has 3 settings and an off setting. Anything above “Off” will introduce the sometimes dreaded “Soap Opera effect”. The higher the setting the more noticeable it is, but at any setting you will notice it. I personally like the effect (I may be among the minority) so I keep Aquamotion on 480 and the film setting at Adaptive High (greatest motion smoothing effect). But I also watch a lot of live sports and a setting of 480 makes football and hockey look amazing – it is almost on par with the jump from SD to HD was it’s that stunning to me. The nice thing is you can change display mode presets on the fly with one button press, so if you like one setting for sports (480) and another for scripted TV (off), you can pretty much do that. I have a “Film” display setting which has the 480 refresh rate on but the motion smoothing set to off – this is great for movies where you want to preserve that scene blurring. I then set “Standard” to have another setting with 120Hz refresh rate and low motion smoothing effect. “User” is yet another setting where I go medium on both settings. And then “Dynamic” has refresh rate and motion smoothing maxed out. I can change it by just pressing the settings button and then scrolling through the presets as the first menu option. So people saying that the setting is buried, while technically correct, are misleading since you can set a system up like mine where you can have it on or off as you like.

One note on these settings when it comes to gamimg. I have a PS4 hooked up to this set and play Fallout 4, Battlefront, and NHL 16, among other games. And these play fantastically with no audio delay even with the refresh rate and set to max, which is pretty awesome. And only slight delay with motion smoothing turned to max, which seems like impressive processing power. Honestly, it’s so good I barely notice any delay, but, I mean it has to exist just knowing how the motion smoothing works (it has to read the current frame and next frame and slip in a predictive frame in between to “smooth” the image and increase frames. So there has to be a time delay while it “thinks” about what frame to slip in…
