EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS!, November 5, 2015
    By

This review is from: Basstyle TH-5001 Professional Monitor Headphones Over-Ear Stereo DJ Headphones for Studio Broadcasting Radio Station Intercoms and Mobile Phones Home Mini Hi-fi Systems with 3.5mm 6.3mm Jack (Gold) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I am really impressed with the Basstyle Professional Monitor Over-Ear Headphones. They came to me packaged in a very nice heavy, sturdy box. There is no way they could get damaged in this box. I love the appearance of the headphones. The gold/black color adds such a professional look to an already stylish design. They are made sturdy and fit very comfortable over my ears. There is absolutely no pressure discomfort with this headphone, unlike the previous brand I purchased, which I couldn’t wear very long without hurting my head. The headphones are marked, to let you known which ear to properly wear them on. The design and padding around the ear portion seals great to my ear, blocking out surrounding noise, and preventing sound leakage from the headset. This is wonderful when listening to music and not worrying about disturbing anyone else near me. The sound to me is amazing. I have watched several movies using these, and the sound quality was above average, to say the least. I love that I can use these with my cellphone, laptop, or desktop. The audio cable is nice and thick, and has in-line mic and volumn control. There are several other adapters included, as well as a beautiful leather storage bag, for storing your headphones. I don’t have one negative thing to say about these headphones. They look great, the price is right, they are very comfortable, and the sound is amazing. I would definitely recommend these to a friend, and gladly rate them 5 stars.
I am so happy I was offered these,
in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion. I promise that my opinions are 100 % my own.

Great sounding headphones with a good fit!, October 24, 2015
    By
    Evan Tubbs (MI, USA) –

I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from these headphones. I expected a lightweight pair of basic, over the ear headphones. However, upon opening the box and trying these headphones out, they have instantly become my main pair of desktop headphones…

The headphones come in a hard box which gave me a great first impression. The headphones come with a variety of accessories. In the box you will receive:

    -Basstyle TH-5001 headphones
    -3.5mm audio cable
-3.5mm iPhone connection female to 3.5mm Nokia connection male adapter
-3.5mm female to two 3.5mm males computer adapter
-3.5mm female to 6.3mm male adapter
-3.5mm female to intercom males adapter
    -Leather bag

I have to admit, these headphones are medium duty. If you plan on beating the crap out of these headphones, they aren’t super durable. The cables are coiled and exposed on the headphones but they are flexible and thick. The headphones are clearly marked left and right to help you put them on correctly. The headphones have aluminum sides and they compress together when you take them off. This compression keeps the headphones tight against your ear giving you a immersive listening experience.

The headphones fit completely over your ears and give you plenty of room to avoid discomfort. They are very comfortable and I can use them for several hours without even getting slightly discomforted. The sound quality is very good and is the best I have heard from over-the ear headphones. The virtualization and bass are very present and the sound stays in the headphones. They do not bleed out hardly at all so I don’t disturb those around me. I also can’t hear outside noise when using these headphones.

The audio cable is thick and has a volume adjuster on it as well as an in-line mic which comes in handy. The only disappointment I had with these headphones was when I tripped over the cable and it bent the 3.5mm tip to my cable. After that, it would not work but that was my fault. I have several replacement cables so I just plugged a new one in and it works fine. Overall, these are great headphones to use at the computer. I listen to music regularly at the computer and these headphones have given me several hours of enjoyable music!

I received this product in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Everything I have written is my own personal thoughts on this product. I welcome both positive and negative feedback but if there is something I can do to improve my reviews, please let me know.

    A Great DJ Headphones Option That’s Under 100 Dollars, May 26, 2015
    By

This review is from: Basstyle TH-5001 Professional Monitor Headphones Over-Ear Stereo DJ Headphones for Studio Broadcasting Radio Station Intercoms and Mobile Phones Home Mini Hi-fi Systems with 3.5mm 6.3mm Jack (Gold) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Can one find many DJ headphones for under 100 dollars? Yes. How many? Many. What about a good one? Not so many. Well here’s one of the good ones. For 10 bucks under 100.
Let’s start with the design: It’s surprisingly good for 90 dollars. Even though you don’t get the kind of metal material like V-Moda Crossfade LPs or Beats Pro, you still get a very sturdy package. The leather cushions on the cans and the headband are very comfy. They will let you listen to music or movies for 4 to 5 hours without squishing your skull. There are two cons about the design, which have been minor to me: First, these cans don’t fold like other headphones do, and they are relatively big, so it is not too easy to carry around. Second, the headband extends well to fit various head sizes but it retracts quite easily. This can be my unit, however. Other than these things, it works great for me. I really like the brushed gold finish and brown leather. They also have a silver and black version but I like this one better.
Okay what’s a headphone review without a talk about the sound? a muted one… ha… ha… ha. Well out of the box, these cans are quite neutral. The bass is there but not overwhelming, the treb is also pretty clear. I was expecting a lot of bass since the company name is “basstyle” but this isn’t a deal breaker. If anything, you’d need neutral sound for music monitoring anyway. This does not mean that it CAN’T have a lot of bass, though. Use Poweramp on your Android phone, for example, turn up the bass and watch, i mean hear, this thing handle it like a champ. Turn up some treble, however, and it will be a little strange due to some hissing sound. I have not let these cans burn in for quite a long time yet so the result could be different after about 20 hours of music playback. Without burning in, I recommend hip hop and rock with these.
So there you go, a great option under 100 dollars! It gives you the bass and the style (as the company name so implies). Just don’t turn your treb up too much. Enjoy!

revision and improvement on ath-ad900, March 19, 2013
    By

This review is from: Audio Technica ATH-AD900X Open-Back Audiophile Headphones (Electronics)
Upon first receiving the headphones I was a bit dismayed to see “designed and engineered in Japan” displayed prominently on the box. This is codespeak for Made in China. Sure enough, unlike its predecessor, the ATH-AD900, this is made in China instead of Japan.

That is the only negative in comparison however. The AD900 required several “ghetto” mods to bring out its best. Stuffing the ear cups with something to get a better seal and using a rubber band or some such to provide a little clamping force to bring out the bass. Once this was done the phones sounded excellent. Should this be necessary though?

The X is a bit lighter. Has MUCH better earpads, softer and thicker. The “wing system” is slightly modified, lighter and still providing little clamping force.

Sound-wise, the X is an evolution of the 900. The frequency response is smoother, with more extension at both ends. Bass is the area of most improvement. Extension is very good, and no longer should this model be considered bass-light. Its just right. Mid-range is a bit less prominent than the 900, and closer to neutral. The vocals no longer jump to the forefront, but are much more natural and not at all sibilant. Treble extends to the limits of my hearing and is airy and detailed. Soundstage continues to be a strength of this model.

Very little to criticize here. Comfort and sound quality are first-rate. Build quality is substantial, despite the change in country of manufacture. This is a detailed phone that is still easy to listen to, non-fatiguing, comfortable, and easy to drive. What’s not to like? I loved the ad900, but this is a substantial improvement and its difficult to find a better headphone for the price.

Signature Airy sound makes them very enjoyable, December 26, 2013
    By

This review is from: Audio Technica ATH-AD900X Open-Back Audiophile Headphones (Electronics)
Got a pair of these for Christmas and am very happy with them so far after letting them burn in for 20-30 hours. As the other reviews have mentioned, these AD900X’s have a massive soundstage and definitely have airy and sparkly highs. Bass response is tight and accurate with just enough impact to be adequate for pop tracks. They really shine with Jazz, female vocals, and any other tracks that would otherwise sound dull on warmer headphones.

Comparing them side to side with my soundstage modded Sennheiser HD555’s showed a stark contrast between their sound signatures. The HD555’s are very smooth and warm, which makes them a bit dark and boring with a lot of recordings imo. However, it also makes them more forgiving. I found that bass extension and impact was a bit better on the AD900X’s. The HD555’s always sounded a bit anemic to me in terms of bass response. The AD900X’s also added an amount of clarity that I didn’t find on the HD555’s — as if a veil had been lifted. The Sennheisers have also been known to have a pretty narrow soundstage. Even with the soundstage mod (removing the foam pieces next to the drivers), I still would not call the soundstage wide. In terms of soundstage width, the AD900X’s blow them away.

Overall, I was pretty happy with my modded HD555’s, but the AD900X’s gave me the lively sound that I was looking for, and meshed much better with my desktop speaker setup (Emotiva Airmotiv 4). The Airmotiv 4 uses ribbon tweeters and also have airy and very extended highs. I wanted something with a similar sound signature when switching back and forth, and I think I’ve found just that with the AD900X.

    Pros:

Absolutely shines with piano or female vocals
Wide soundstage with good amount of depth
    Airy, extended highs
    Smooth mids
Fast bass response with the right amount of impact for me
Very comfortable with no need to adjust
    Good build quality

    Cons:

Can sound a bit harsh or sibilant with some recordings (not a good match with synthesized music imo)
Does not have huge bass impact required to shine with pop and hip hop music
Such a wide soundstage also means slightly less pinpoint imaging

Thinking about upgrading from the ATH-AD700? Looking for slightly more bass? My experience …, November 13, 2015
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Audio Technica ATH-AD900X Open-Back Audiophile Headphones (Electronics)

I would call myself a big time Audio Technica fan. I’ve had the Audio Technica AD700s for nearly four years, and have listened to them for over 5,000 hours (4 – 8 hours a day). Personally, my driving motive behind this purchase was to get a little more “oomph” in the low end, compared to what I was already getting. I listen to mostly electronic, downtempo, and classical on these headphones. After realizing I’ve had them for so long, and noticing tearing in the pleather details on the sides, I decided to finally upgrade.

I was excited for this product to arrive in the mail. I looked forward to “falling in love” and being “floored” again by the sound of my beloved AD700s, but this was supposedly IMPROVED! Even if prime wasn’t available, I just couldn’t wait. After an unfortunately (5 days over my expectation! That sucks, especially if I’m this excited!) long wait, I am sad to say that I wasn’t too impressed. I had read in many places that the AD900x’s were a “direct upgrade” to the AD700s, however, my initial impression was that it hardly sounded any different from the predecessor. The AD700s seemed to be the overall better headphone (disregarding current price and availability). Why is that? Let me explain.

    BUILD QUALITY: 7/10

Aesthetically, these headphones look much nicer than my AD700s (apart from the hollow wing system padding). The honeycomb grill is significantly more transparent on these, which I may suspect is more prone to denting than the previous “purple” grill of the AD700. However, it looks much nicer and professional than my previous. Unfortunately, apart from the actual driver housings, pads, etc., the downfall of the AD900x is found within the cable. On the AD700s, you will find a nice, memory-free cable that will straighten up over the first few hours of usage. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same of the AD900x — the cable would absolutely NEVER straighten out. It comes wound up, and will retain this wound up state for a while. I actually couldn’t get them to sit on my headphone stand straight, because the cord kept pulling them crooked. Additionally, the cable’s 3.5mm termination is completely rubber/plastic, unlike the AD700s metal one. Overall, I feel much safer “roughing up” the AD700 over AD900x.

    COMFORT: 6/10

Let’s start with one of the most important aspects of the headphones, apart from the sound quality itself. The AD700s were the perfect fit for me — they just sat on my head, making them one of the best fits for at home, on-the-computer headphones for long periods of time. The wing system was relatively easy to adjust to, and I felt the springiness of the individual wings was perfect. The headphones barely gave any clamping force on my jaw/cheeks, which was great (I suffer from TMJ disorder, making this a little more important). However, the comfort of the AD900x’s seems to be a slight downgrade. The wing system is one of the most noticeable changes. Previously, the wing system had nearly 1 cm of solid padding. On this revised AD900x, the wing system is hollowed out in the center, and the padding is significantly thinner (~.6 cm). Additionally, the springs have been weakened greatly. The headphones are more likely to slide downwards from the “sweet spot” on my head, over a period of time. This is also contributed by the significantly increased clamping force of the headphones — I would have bent the two steel outwards to relieve clamping force, but this would make the weakness of the wing system even more prominent. Overall, a combination of a weakened wing system and higher clamping force make this one difficult to wear for long periods without constant adjustment.

    SOUND: 8.5/10

Not necessarily what I was looking for … but it will suffice. Why? Because, my first impression of the sound, was uncannily similar to … well, you guessed it — the AD700s. In these headphones, you’ll be getting the signature Audio-Technica house sound (bright, sparkly treble, airy, transparent). I’m not so much a firm believer in mechanical burn-in as much as psychological burn-in, but even after two days of using these headphones exclusively, I can say that the AD700 sounds slightly smoother than the AD900x. The soundstage is even slightly smaller than the original AD700s. As for the promise of increased bass, I wouldn’t exactly say that. The low tones seem to be tighter, and cleaner than the AD700s; but as for amount, they’re pretty similar. In fact, I really wanted to love the sound of the AD900x, but it just sounded too similar to the previous. If you came looking at this headphone in search of more bass, more low end, more oomph, you probably won’t be satisfied. Keep in mind my listening preferences — I auditioned a lot of electronic (house, pop, etc.) in my tests.

    OVERALL: 7.5/10
+ Similar sound signature to the AD line
    + Airy, crisp,…
