Great upgrade for multichannel music listeners and 2-subwoofer setups., December 18, 2014

Upgraded from the SC-77 for two reasons – support for 5.1 flac playback over the network and the new subwoofer features in MCACC Pro.

The unit does indeed play the 5.1 flacs. Its DLNA player implementation seems to work great. Its Renderer implementation (where you “push” media to the unit from another device rather than using the unit itself to browse and control playback) works, but has some instability. It does not work as well with JRiver Media Center and jRemote as my Oppo. But if you just use the unit as a player and then use the EXCELLENT iOS/Android control app from Pioneer, it works great and you don’t have to turn anything else on to play network music.

The dual-subwoofer feature added to MCACC in this unit and its sisters is a home run for me. I have a dual-8″ setup in my home, where the subs are nowhere near to being symmetrically placed. As such, being able to individually EQ and delay each has resulted in a much tighter bass, with a more defined attack and less mud. So this is one of those rare units that means “.2” when it says “.2”. (many units say “.2” when they have two subwoofer outputs, but both outputs really have the same exact signal on them – like a “Y” cable).

Also, if you have a speaker system with cone-based drivers and traditional passive cross-overs, then the advanced phase control features (which go BEYOND just enclosure-to-enclosure delay into correcting for phase distortion at the cross-overs within the speakers) this unit can make a huge, positive difference in sound quality. This is something that my SC-77 did too, and it is one of the reasons that I wanted to stay in the Elite line and at this level.

The big downside that I see for movie buffs is the limits on Atmos support on this unit. You have 9 power amps in this unit and the Atmos decoder will not go beyond 9 channels + sub(s), even if you want to use the pre-outs for 2 channels and then another power amp. You can do 9.2 with no Atmos, 7.2.2 with Atmos, or 5.2.2 or 5.2.4 with Atmos. Most importantly, you CANNOT do 7.2.4 – so pay attention to that if you care about Atmos.

Pioneer Elite SC-81—-A Bargain AVR For $1000.00?, September 29, 2014

    *****Updates At Bottom*****

The short answer is you bet!

$$$$$IF you get lucky (see updates at the bottom that changed my 5 star review).$$$$$

How is it possible that an A/V Receiver is still a bargain at $1000.00? There are also key features missing and options some will be screaming about. But eventually they discover some hidden nuggets this offers that will simply blow them away. Nuggets that cost thousands just yesterday. You will hear them and see them. They will breath new life into all you watch & listen to and you WILL find the value in this receiver. So what’s so great, whats missing? What’s so special about THIS A/V Receiver?

It begins by delivering studio quality audio AND video. When you add the more advanced features of ESS Sabre Premier Audio DAC’s, 4K 60P Ultra HD Compatibility, the newest HDMI 2.0 specification for the highest video signal transfer there is, Roku Ready Certification with dedicated MHL 2.0 HDMI Port…..Oh, but there is SO much more. You get expanded multi-Zone and multi source management and functionality with Pioneer’s proprietary iControlAV5 App.

I really don’t want to list a bunch of copy & Paste specifications we can all see everywhere we look when searching for info about this. What I would LIKE to do is pass on a couple things learned in setting it up and USING it. Doing the setup using the Advanced MCAC with Subwoofer EQ is SO much more thorough than either my Yamaha’s or Sony’s using my old familiar Audyssey program.

Should you stumble around a bit like myself in your excitement to get this set up NOW, in other words, in a big hurry and sort of ignoring the instructions and blazing through what used to be familiar territory, you may find low sound levels and/or NO sound coming from the sub. Instead of explaining all the steps you could go through in vain while in a panic, I’ll just tell you how to avoid this panic in the first place:-) Do NOT choose SYMMETRIC—-Change it to ALL CH when you run Full MCACC. And this way you will hear your speakers and hear that sub too. Otherwise you will read the manual 3, 4, maybe 5 MORE times like I did an muttering things like “UPS MUST have damaged this cuz it won’t work”! Rest easy. Also, if you hear 3 beeps when turning this on? Check your setting and make sure you are not set to Bi-Amp unless of course your DID wire Bi_amp. You will then see that the 3 beeps should disappear.

Unlike the good old days (uh, like this morning…) The Elite Class D3 amplifiers are 4-ohm certified, so they will safely power low-impedance speakers that other receivers are not made to handle. Now I needed that 3 weeks ago but as luck would have it I just replaced all my old speakers with new 8 OHM drivers so I guess now it doesn’t matter. Just nice to know this will NOT harm just about anything you plan to connect to it. As for jitterless bitstreams, I am sad to report I have NOT achieved that as yet with this receiver but hoping to find SOME way to do so. Could be me since I am still experimenting with the abundant choices in setups. To get to picture & sound, this simply STOMPS on my nice Yamaha’s. My Sony is a budget model so no surprise there. But for it to flat run away from my 2 Yamaha receivers is actually a bit of a surprise. Not that I am complaining. For the record I have all 7 HDMI slots filled as well with NO glitches, NO HDMI Pass through issues (as yet!) but I have been here WAY too many times to only get my heart broken a few hours or days later. So far, the ONLY A/V Receiver I owned that never failed me in HDMI problems is my Marantz. So now I can’t wait to see if this Pioneer can survive the abuse of this retired 18 PLUS hours per day, every single day of the week gaming, Roku & Amazon Fire TV Streaming, music streaming and downright nothing better to do use. That “I am gonna NEVER turn you off” kind of use. I waited my entire life to retire and spend my time WASTING my time gaming so we shall see!

    My speaker set up is:
    -Pioneer Elite SC-81 7.2-Channel Class D3 Network A/V Receiver with HDMI 2.0
    -Klipsch KF-26 Towers
    -Klipsch KC-25 Center
    -BIC Acoustech PL-66 Surrounds
    -Outlaw LFM-1 Plus Sub

MY HDMI ports are filled with:
    -XBOX 360
    -XBOX One
    -Amazon Fire TV
    -PS4
    -BluRay Player
    -COX Cable DVR
    -PS3

I love almost every single thing about this receiver. I guess it is safe to say I love everything about it that it HAS. Which brings me to what I do not like, and that is going to be only items that this does NOT include in the purchase price. I know, $1,000.00 is a LOT of money. But I also know that with what this receiver DOES include within its case is a LOT. You do get an awful LOT for your money so I would not consider the items below any form of complaint, but I DO miss them. I do not like that this does NOT include:

    -Built In Wi-Fi…

Nightmare receiver after 6 months., June 22, 2015

It worked great when I first had it. Over time things stopped working. Arc return went, and now my HDMI 4 no longer shows up. I also can’t get the menu up. My 4k screens flicker and drop out. Pretty sure I got a bunk unit. Amazon won’t let me return it and I spent 4 hours on the phone waiting for Pioneer Support. Never picked up, and the * function….well they never called back. NIGHTMARE.
