Good price, but features are hit-and-miss, November 10, 2015
    By

For an inexpensive 4K TV, this isn’t too bad, but there are some issues. The picture is sharp, motion is smooth, and colors pop very nicely. However, it’s rather obvious that Samsung cut some corners to hit this price point. The smart features are nice, but the processor is woefully underpowered to handle basic tasks. It is nice that Samsung included a built-in channel guide for users who watch over-the-air broadcast, but the lag is terrible when scrolling through the guide. Like many modern channel guides, you get a quarter-screen-size picture of the channel you are currently watching and the rest of the screen is taken up by the guide. For whatever reason though, when you scroll through the guide both the guide and the channel you are watching completely stop while the next page takes up to five seconds to load. It’s disappointing that this TV can flawlessly stream 4K content, yet can’t seem to handle flipping through pages of a channel guide. Regardless, since I consider a channel guide to be icing on the cake and not a core feature, I can overlook that easily. What is harder to overlook is the inconsistent backlight performance. During dark scenes or when watching a program with letterboxes on the top and bottom, there is a very distracting light blob in the bottom center of my screen. This can be fixed somewhat by turning the backlight way down, but the resulting picture is so dim it’s hardly worth it. We actually traded in a similarly-priced 2014 Samsung model for this one because it too had backlight problems. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem with at least their lower-end 4K televisions. Samsung also cut back on some features compared to last year’s equivalent model, too. You get fewer connections in the rear, and the remote no longer has light-up keys, which kind of stinks if you like to watch TV in the dark.

Overall, it’s a pretty good TV, but it has some noteworthy flaws. If you can stand a laggy interface and some pretty glaring inconsistencies in the black levels, it’s a good TV for the price. If you want a snappy interface and even black levels, look elsewhere.

Major Flashlighting and poor blacks…, November 27, 2015

I have always loved Samsung TVs but this one is horrible for any darker room or dark scenes… This picture was taken with the lights off and the lighting settings adjusted to a tolerable level just before the screen gets too dark. As you can see there’s major flashlighting and poor blacks, so much so I have to return my new 4K…

Boo. There is no UHD color on this model., July 24, 2015

Boo. There is no UHD color on this model. You’ll need to get the UN40JU6500 to get UHD color on the HDMI input. I bought the UN40JU6500 and the color makes a SIGNIFICANT difference when hooked up to a computer via HDMI. The UN40JU6500 is the one to get, it’s a great TV/Monitor — this model is more like a Black Friday special. It’s a capable TV, but stripped down to meet a price point (less USB ports, non-a/c wifi, less HDMI ports, etc…) and not useful as a TV AND Monitor.

As per Samsung manual (Page 152) for this unit: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201506/20150630120040629/ENG-US_HMUATSCJ-1.310-0521.pdf

For the 6500 to 6800, 650D, 670D, 7000, and 7200 series models, make sure to connect to the HDMI IN
    (STB/DVI) port of the TV.

Although the HDMI cable is connected to HDMI IN (STB/DVI) port, the HDMI UHD Color function is not
available on the 6000, 6400, and the 640D series models
