Great TV, Misleading advertising, July 1, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
We love this TV; our experiences over the years with Sharp Aquos have been great, and this is no exception. It arrived in PERFECT condition, and while we are still working with the settings to optimize it for the look we want (normal fiddling for any high quality large screen), we have been impressed with everything (except the speakers, which we expected to be less than stellar; VIZIO sound bar fixed that in a hurry ).
BUT APP LOVERS BEWARE! Although we notified Amazon and they should have fixed this, the description above still mentions ” streaming from providers like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and YouTube”. Amazon Instant Video is a service we really enjoy and use. We found out the hard way (calling Amazon, then calling Sharp) that Sharp does NOT have any agreement with Amazon Instant Video and that services is NOT built in to the apps on this TV – or any other Sharp TV, either! You must have a Roku, or other device that can stream this service, connected to the TV. luckily we had one, but we weren’t very happy and we let Amazon know it.
For the price, this is an outstanding TV – but don’t buy this if you want out of the box Amazon Instant Video – buy a Samsung or LG instead.

This review is from: Sharp LC-43UB30U 43-Inch 4K Ultra HD 60Hz Smart LED TV (2015 Model) (Electronics)
I bought this TV from a big box store and got the extended coverage through Geek Squad. After two months the panel went bad; there is a 3-inch horizontal bar along the bottom of the television that flashes random colors. I contacted for service. My television was inspected by Geek Squad, who confirmed that the panel is bad. I was told I would receive a repair or replacement within 14 days. That was three weeks ago. Geek Squad said it’s in the hands of Sharp. Sharp punted to Amtran, the manufacturer. Amtran doesn’t trust Geek Squad’s assessment and wants to send their own inspector. It goes on and on. Obviously Sharp does not stand behind their product.

    **Edit: Follow-Up**

Amtran wanted to do everything again: inspect again, have me send receipts and pictures of the damage again, etc. After all was said and done they offered me a factory refurbished TV. I pointed out that I had bought a new TV that functioned for only two months, and that if I wanted a used TV I would have paid a lot less. They wouldn’t budge. So Geek Squad came through for me and offered to replace the TV. They gave me a store credit, and I got a different brand, new. The only problem is that the replacement “consumed” the Geek Squad warranty on the first TV. I think it was $80 when I bought it, so that’s $40.00 a month I paid to insure my TV against stupid manufacturing, over and above the cost of the TV. Still, when I got the replacement I did buy the Geek Squad coverage again — it was the only thing that worked!

With any luck there will be a class-action lawsuit against Amtran at some point to which I can be a party.

This television was a nice upgrade from our previous 42″ TV that was 1080p and not an LED backlight. Immediately I obviously noticed the size of the TV (50″ is definitely bigger than 42″), but most importantly, the picture is amazingly crisp with an phenomenal depth of color that I never saw with my older non-LED backlight TV. Everything on the display is sharp and crisp, with far more depth to the black and more detail to the color than I ever saw before. I thought I had no way to test the 4k capability, but when I hooked it up to Netflix (an easy process!), a new category appeared with UltraHD content. There’s not a lot available yet, but what I did watch looked amazingly realistic and sharp. Even more surprising, older shows that are only in regular 1080p HD still look amazing on this TV. I was watching some old episodes of The Office and appreciated the quality and clarity of the new display. I’m sure more 4k content will come soon, but in the meantime, this worked quite well. Older high definition displays could choke on lower resolution sources, especially SD. I tried some low resolution sources and didn’t see any artifacts, banding, or other issues that would distract from the image. Of course the TV cannot make up additional pixels, but it does a nice job filling the display with the information it has.

The TV stand is a little different from my old set – instead of a single stand in the middle with a TV that pivots, the TV itself is fixed on 2 end legs. This is not surprising, perhaps due to the large size of the TV. The one issue is that it causes the TV to sit a little lower than my old TV, so I had to make a few adjustments to my TV stand.

I was also impressed by the quality of the internal speakers. Certainly they aren’t as good as my sound bar, but they are far better than any other TV I have purchased in recent memory, and I’d have no issue using them for regular TV watching if need be (but still prefer my sound bar).

The TV itself comes with a remote and an “IR-Blaster” with USB extension cable, useful if you have other equipment in a cabinet and you want t extend the reach of your other remote controls.

I also noticed that the TV was fast – I put some USB sticks with home movies in the TV, and it loaded them almost instantly – far faster than my old TV. The “picture frame” feature is also really cool – when the TV is off, it will play internal photo memory or photos you load on there to make it into a virtual picture frame. I am just using the stock photos now, but it is a great feature. The stock photos are beyond beautiful and brilliant – they are superb.

One issue I did experience is that this TV sits lower than my old LG TV. That means the Sony Soundbar which I had on the table in front of the TV now blocks the bottom inch of the screen and also blocks the Infrared port which is on the bottom of the screen. In other words, I have to stand up to get my remote to work. My solution will likely be to move the sound bar as I don’t want to put something under the TV and possible make it unstable. I won’t ding the TV for this – it certainly seems more stable than my old TV since it sits lower, but it is something to consider depending on your home theater setup.

If you already own an LED backlit display, I don’t know if this upgrade will be huge for you since there isn’t a lot of 4k content out there yet. But if your TV is older than about 4 years, you will immediately notice and appreciate not only the improvements in backlight control, but the higher resolution and better processing that you get with this TV.
