Great device, hard to hold still,
Pros:
– As said, this thing is consistently very accurate.
– In most cases, it is vastly superior to tape measures in speed of use, accuracy, and the myriad of extras like unit conversion, area calculation, memory stack, etc.
– Very well built
– Nice display
– Mostly well designed understandable button setup, but a few of the buttons foxed me when I first used the unit.
Cons:
– On longer distances it is difficult to hold the device still while you press the button (which requires a bit too much pressure in my opinion). So, if I’m measuring from a wall to a stake, I must hold the thing very still so that when the button clicks to measure, the unit doesn’t shake the dot off the stake for the measurement. It has a screw mount for a tripod but that would defeat the idea of quick and easy measurements.
– The laser dot is hard to see in bright light and for my old eyes, it is sometimes hard to find even when there is low light pollution. I find myself bringing the dot near me on the ground and then following it back to the target or putting the unit up to my eye so I can sight along the ridge line on the side (which lines up the laser quite well, but then measures from your eye rather than from where you actually want the source of the measurement).
– It can’t measure a length that doesn’t have a face (i.e. you can’t use it to measure the length of a board without putting something at the end of the board to reflect the laser).
Undecided:
– I paid the extra for this unit so that I could use the height measurement from a distance to measure commercial height of the trees in my hardwood plantation. Although it seems to work very well I haven’t tested it properly yet. I’ll come back on this one.
All in all, I’d buy it again and recommend it. Although if you don’t need the height measurement, then it is a bit of overkill on the price.
