I’ve owned 4 other flying RC copters and 3 out of the 4 didn’t make it through the testing. I get these products for free in exchange for a review so I do my best to beat them up. This quad copter holds up great and with plenty of included replacement parts you don’t have to worry if your large intoxicated uncle sits on it. I’ve bumped, banged and dropped this copter from a number of locations to a number of surfaces without issue.
Functionality:
Sturdy with options for correction. The remote holds the keys to a number of available corrections but i’ll get into that later. The copter flys steady, true and high. The camera and video function are easy to pick up. The picture above a truck was taken on a windy day. Simplistic in design the rings look like colorful oversized soda can plastic rings but it works.
Remote:
The remote resembles a hard core kids toy remote that packs a bunch of buttons for looks. The difference here is that these things all have a function. It shows the acceleration speed in clear large numbers as well as the adjustments that you have made.
Fun:
It all boils down to fun. As a reviewer I strip this down into the below:
1) Quality – Built to last. Fun isn’t fun if it ends prematurely. I believe in the quality of this copter and have witnessed it through a series of tests.
2) Functionality – Yea this is mentioned above but in term of fun the copter has to perform in a way that people can pick up and enjoy. The “slow” setting allows for beginners to pick up and play while fast mode allows more experienced users the ability to let this thing loose. A well thought out and fun to use copter.
3) Service – Food tastes worse with a bad server, hotels are less enticing with unprofessional staff and toys can be ruined if the manufacturer doesn’t hear you. USA Toyz puts a big emphasis on customer service. I’ve spoken with them multiple times and have faith that they will be responsive for you.
Summary
A great sub $100 copter with tons of features. The videos and pictures look great and in the end it has been a pleasure to review.

This review is for the UDI 818A Discovery HD Quadcopter.
I’m a big fan of anything RC and especially love quadcopter/drones and helicopters. I started with electric RC cars, worked my way up to nitro RC cars/trucks, then helicopters, and somewhat recently have I gotten into drones. Though they are very easy to fly, they do have their challenges and they are just a blast regardless.
This is the second (maybe 3rd?) UDI product I have owned and have loved the others, this one is no different. With your purchase, you receive the drone, a transmitter, two rechargeable batteries, a whole bunch of replacement propellers (I think 8), a mini phillips screwdriver, a 4GB micro-SD card, and a USB battery charger. Like any rechargeable battery powered product, you should always charge the batteries to full power before using the drone. It took probably around 30 minutes and you can charge both batteries at once. The transmitter requires 4 AA batteries and I installed four 700mAh rechargeable batteries that were only 1.2A each – the transmitter registered at about 3/4 battery power. You can choose to install the micro-SD card if you will be taking photos/video.
The transmitter has your usual controls and adjustments, and then some. The left top trigger button is your roll button (quad does a flip), the right top trigger button turns on LED lights in front and on bottom of the drone and is also the “headless” control (instructions explain), then of course you have your 6-axis controls and subsequent adjustments. Near the display, you have your record button, photo button, speed button (on 1st speed, the drone moves slowly, 2nd speed the drone has very quick movements which is for experts), and return home function/second flip button.
Right out of the box, this quad flies amazingly well with literally no adjustments! I was actually very impressed at how smooth this flew. I’ve always had to make slight adjustments, but not with this one. This drone is extremely lightweight and made almost entirely out of plastic. As such, it moves very smoothly through the air and even when you have it on the 1st speed controls, the movements are quite smooth because of 1) the low weight and 2) due to the gyro stabilization system. The drone is very responsive and its actually hard to over correct yourself. Many other helicopters and drones I have requires huge inputs on the transmitter to stop the drone from going one direction which then causes it to loose control in the other direction. Because this one is so lightweight, if you are about to crash into a wall, it takes little correction and even if you max out the control on the transmitter, you can easily recover. If you DO crash into a wall, the propeller guards and the whole body for that matter is extremely flexible. I’ve hit some walls pretty hard and the drone just bounced off of it no problems. I’ve also fallen from about 10 feet and also, no problems.
Now onto some of the other features. First, the flip feature. While in flight, you can flip the drone by pressing the right top trigger button, then up or down on the right joystick. Doing this will cause you to loos elevation, so I also recommend giving it throttle – you will figure this out on your own as you go. The other option is to hit the function button near the display on the transmitter and it will flip without touching the right joystick. There is also the return home function. First, the drone must be on the headless feature (check the manual for what this is). When you get far away from the takeoff spot, press and hold the function button for a second (don’t just quickly press or it will flip) and it will immediately head backwards to where you came. I don’t know if it was designed to do this, but mine will just fly towards me and then keep going past me – it doesn’t actually stop at where it took off from. So, it requires me to do some kind of input, such as adjust the right joystick when it gets close to me and then I will manually land it. So, if I am doing this return home feature wrong and someone reading this knows I am doing it wrong – let me know! Either way, it definitely gets back home in a straight shot with no inputs! Finally, you have the HD video and photo recording. Not only does it record HD video, but it also records sound! I recorded about a 3.5 minute video and it took up about 644mb worth of space, which shows you that its a good picture quality. The video quality is quite nice and rather stable, unless of course your drone is all over the place.
I took a video and uploaded it to this review while flying outside. it was actually very windy, which brings me to my next point. While this is gyro stabilized and has four propellers, this really is not designed for situations when there is wind. You can easily handle 1 or 2 mph winds, but even then you are using so much power and your own energy…

Upon unboxing I noticed two scratches on the LCD of the controller. A bit disconcerting as I should have put those scratches there and not have had someone else do it for me. Other than that the unit looks good.
Now the manual is written in poor English however; I realize the British think we suffer from poor English and so, I shall not complain.

Oh look… I’m blind – those LED’s are bright if your looking at them when you plug the battery in.
Oh… no! IT LIVES! Yeah, no problems flies well indoors against my better half’s judgement. (I’m not married, ergo, I’m not required to listen since I pay all the bills.) I’d recommend this. Oh and yes, it did have all the ‘correct’ markings on the box. Thanks all!
Is it worth it? Definitely as it makes a good first quad. It’s a bit more expensive than a micro or mini but still, this one I can see and at my age that’s a plus!
