I am writing this review as a head to head comparison of the three bluetooth speakers I have used right now: the Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II – Nylon, the Sony Bluetooth Wireless Speaker system, Black and the Eton Rugged Rukus All-Terrain Portable Solar Wireless Sound System (Green).

I will cover the physical aspects, ease of use, battery life, sound, and miscellaneous for each speaker.

Physically, the largest and heaviest is the Sony at almost 18 inches long and almost 5 pounds, not including the charger and carrying case; the Bose is next at 9 1/2 inches and almost 3 pounds, including the carrying cover but not the charger; lastly, the Rukus is a flat 6×6 1/2 inches weighing in at 1.2 pounds, no charger – it’s solar.

Ease of use is about equal, power buttons, bluetooth sync, volume, etc. are all readily accessible and usable, no rocket science here. All shut down after a suitable period if not in use to conserve battery.

Battery life is a differentiator, the Sony is by far the longevity winner with at least 8 hours between charges, the Bose claims eight hours but I have felt lucky to get 4-6 hours, the Rukus will play for ever in direct sunlight and about 4-6 on charge (if only playing music not charging another device).

Both the Sony and Bose offer great sound, I’d be hard pressed to select one over the other (I’m sure there are those out there with better ears, I’m not one of them). The Bose might offer slightly better range and the Sony offers better bass, but that’s just my opinion. The Rukus is a far cry below in sound quality, more like a portable radio than a stereo speaker set.

Misc. qualities – the Bose has its cover built in, which doubles as its stand; the Sony can charge your devices, the Rukus is SOLAR and can also charge your devices (though the battery life is suitably reduced).

Ultimately, each of these devices has its prime use, the Sony is great for outdoor use if you need extended play time and don’t need to carry it too far, the Bose is suitable for shorter outings and offers easier portability, the Rukus is for extended trip or camping where electricity is at a premium or non-existent and rugged construction is at a premium. The user will have to decide upon their priorities and select the appropriate speaker. P-)

Can it not get higher than 5 stars? Bugger.. This wee speaker would easily have attained that mark!
Let me tell you a story. When I first saw these speakers for sale on amazon I thought “well amazon is a trustworthy site, but are Eton a trustworthy company to invest ~$120 (NZD) in?”
It turns out they absoloutley are! Living in rural New Zealand I don’t often feel like I have a top of the line anything.. Until I saw these!
This little bugger can pump out tunes for days on end! I have literally had it run out of battery once (and have owned mine for 7.5 months) and that was because it was upside down! It charges in the most minimum of sunlight and easily outlasts any “UE boom” or “beats pill” (although it can’t quite match the noise output of a UE) a few complaints have been made about these however and I’ll address them now.
“Not waterproof” said one unhappy user. Well if only he had read the full description of the rukus! No it’s not waterproof but mine has been sprayed by sea, sand, hoses and showers! They may not be entirely water tight but they are very near it! Often what I do if I think it will get wet (eg rainy days working outside) I’ll wrap the rukus in a plastic bag and this will definitely do the trick. Just make sure your knot is good enough for keeping water out! Another mod is buying a cheap tablet screen protector, cutting it to size and applying it to the solar panel, my solar panel is perfectly clear and in marked because of this! The protector doesn’t effect charging via solar. And last but not least turn it into a backpack by tying two loops of rope to the carabinier loops then just put it on and rock some music! (No strings attached) (I’m terribly sorry for that pun and would invite you to please continue reading this review. I won’t do it again, promise!) I was skiing with it have been mountain biking with it gokarting and most of all farming! This speaker takes the boredom out of most chores! Especially fencing… When you are usually very far away from the nearest power socket, this little speaker will not fail you. Trust me.

Even as I write this review I am pumping red hot chili peppers at full noise!
Now I’m not a very good writer.. But I hope I have convinced you to get one. If you work a menial outside job, these are the way to make it better just make sure you bring the tunes!
P.S.if Eton would like to send me some trial products I would be glad to review them or help them to refine the designs and anything like that.
    Thanks
    Roger

I’ve had an Eton Rukus for awhile that I picked up off a deal site for an incredible price. I’ve been very happy with it and was considering getting the solar powered version when I saw a “rugged” version was being made. As I use my speaker in places where damage is a strong possibility, I decided to wait until this little unit was released. I’m glad I did. So, where to begin:

First off, this is small. Coming from the original Rukus, I’m used to a speaker that has a decent footprint. I assumed this was similar (yeah, didn’t read the product description very well) so when I received the Rugged I was surprised at the size of the box. The speaker is all of 6″x7″x2″. Which in retrospect is actually a great thing. It fits in places the full size rukus wouldn’t and it’s much easier if your stowing it in a backpack for camping. It’s also very light, weighing in at 1#3oz. Again, important if your backpacking.

I was a little disappointed when I opened it, as I assumed small size = small sound. Not so. This puts out sound on par with the full size Rukus, so plenty of volume for a campsite or backyard. If you’re looking for something to fill a block pary, you’ll be disappointed, but that’s not what it’s designed for. It’s also very clean. Running off bluetooth with volume maxed there is very little distortion. The bass is a little weak, but for a system with 1.5″ speaker it’s acceptable.

Jumping to the solar panel, it’s a standard 6×6″ made up of 20 cells. Mine came almost fully charged, so I drained it then set it out starting at noon today (North Dakota, 80 degrees, no clouds). By 4:30pm it was fully charged, so slightly better than the listed 5 hours. I did not have it playing while charging, will try that this weekend and see how well the panel can handle both duties. Back panel has micro-USB input to charge, standard USB output to run to your device. Also is an aux input if you’re not connecting via bluetooth.

Moving to bluetooth, the setup is simple and connection is solid. Standard procedure of holding the bluetooth button, waiting for a beep, looking for the rukus on your phone/mps player and connecting. A few drop outs if I walked too far away, but that’s typical.

A few final things. As another reviewer mentioned there is no handle, but it’s small enough it’s simple to carry in your hand. There is also 2 retaining loops on the back of the chassis that you can use to attach it to your pack, boat deck, etc…so it doesn’t fall when being used. The panel cover is also plastic (I think I saw another reviewer say his was glass). This is nice as it’s less prone to shattering, but it’s also soft enough that it’s a magnet for scratches. Mine came with multiple fine swirls. These where easily removed with an automotive plastic swirl remover, but in a device that’s designed for rugged use a stronger panel cover would have been nice. Gorilla glass for version 2.0?

In all, a surprisingly nice small solar powered bluetooth speaker. Well worth the price if you like to bring your music with you to share.
