Great value, but a few issues, November 11, 2014
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This is definitely a solid TV, and probably the best value you can get for a 4k TV right now. I’m happy with my purchase, but not totally happy with everything. First, the fact that it sits on two legs instead of a center stand is a little problematic. It requires you to have a TV Console that is at least the width of the TV, if not bigger. We either had to replace our current TV console or purchase a Universal TV stand to make it work in our current setup. Not a huge problem, but a bit annoying that LG doesn’t offer a center stand option for this model. Additionally, the two legs make it sit sort of low, so if you plan on placing a soundbar directly in front of it, which you may want with this TV given its average speakers, it might block a thin bottom portion of the screen. For me that’s intolerable, so another reason to get a Universal TV stand.

The picture quality is great, but it definitely requires some tweaking. The default settings are okay, but I think you get the best experience if you go into “Expert” mode and really customize the settings to your liking. I spent some time on it, and got it to a place I generally like, but it’s not perfect for all content. Luckily, you can store multiple configurations, so I found that useful. Since I play PS4 games with this TV, the “TruMotion” setting can really make the experience weird if the framerate of the game is too low, so normally I keep that setting off for game playing. The Dynamic Contract, Dynamic Color and Local Dimming, are cool features, but they can be confusing if you’re encountering them for the first time. They do enhance the quality of the picture, but not consistently. I recommend playing with them a bit, to get an understanding of how they work.

As other 4k reviewers have noted, 4k content is still pretty limited, so don’t expect beautiful 4k clarity everywhere you go. I connected my Retina MacBook Pro via HDMI, which outputs 4k, so I’m able to watch 4k content from there, but otherwise I’m limited to the smart apps on the TV. The Netflix app works pretty well, but their 4k content is still pretty limited. I look forward to the day Apple comes out with a 4k Apple TV, but I’m not really holding my breath on that one.

Overall, this is a good buy, and I recommend it. I’d give it five stars if it wasn’t for the issues I mentioned above. Compared to other brands, I think this is the best TV you can get for the money. I know there are brands out there like Seiki that will sell TVs dirt cheap, but based on the reviews, it looks like you really get what you pay for. This is my second LG TV, and so far I’ve been pleased with its performance.

Great TV overall and for the price, a good 4k monitor., March 5, 2015
    By

I’m torn here. If I had purchased this solely for TV use, it would be 5 stars all the way. As it is, I purchased it as a PC monitor and here there are trade-offs, hence the 4-stars.

Yes, this will do 4k@60Hz BUT not at 4:4:4 color. For the PC folks, 4:4:4 is effecively 24bit color. I’m not a pro so I’m not sure if it’s 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, but the yellowish fringing al ALL the single-pixel lines tells me that it’s not 4:4:4. Basically, if 4:4:4 where 24bit (8bits red, 8bits green, 8bits blue), 4:2:0 would be more like 12 bits red, 6 bits green, 1 bit blue except that HDMI uses YUV which is luminosity (how bright), hue (what color) and saturation (how washed out is the color). This is because we are MOST sensitive to brightness, less to hue and less still to saturation. The trouble here is that there isn’t an equal amount of data provided per color/sub-pixel and it can cause funny effects for computer graphics that aren’t noticed on video because video adjusts for these variables AND is rarely as detail oriented in a unnatural way.

Anyway, my GTX 980 actually negotiates all the way up to 5793×3055 (is that 5k?) at 60Hz, 32bit and the display takes it, but of course, once it scales, it’s not clear. This is over HDMI 2.0 (I KNOW many of you are going to think I’m full of it so see the screenshot below).

At 4k/60Hz, it’s not a bad display at all and with smoothing on, there is mouse-lag, but without smoothing, there is NO latency. The smoothing actually works quite nice when gaming to affect >60Hz (frame interpolation) in a valuable way.

There’s a bug in the present firmware where each time I power it up, I must turn off “Super Resolution” (no idea what that’s supposed to mean, but it looks like it takes it from 4:2:2 to 4:2:0 color to me). The best explanation I’ve found is here: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/1381724-official-4-4-4-chroma-subsampling-thread.html

The color is consistent across the display, but at the ~2ft distance I’m using it at, there is some shimmering at the edges that goes away if I move toward it (wide viewing angle shimmers a bit). It’s just enough that text gets a bit hard to read and the image looks a little washed out at the edges (unless I move to look directly at it). As a TV, this wouldn’t be an issue because you’d likely be at least twice as far away.

The built in speakers are respectable and almost invisible as they port out the bottom. The power button is interesting to; it’s behind the bottom of the display and is like a little joystick.

If you want a <$1k, 40″ 4k PC monitor, it’s not bad but I think I’ll be trying the Samsung next because I feel like I might be giving up just enough visual quality that I’m not satisfied and if I can’t that with the Samsung either, I’m falling back to the Samsung 32″ monitor with DisplayPort support, but I sit and stare at my screen >8 hours/day so I’m likely a bit more picky that most.

UPDATE: Just confirmed in the manual and with support that this monitor presently DOES NOT do 4k@60Hz 4:4:4 ( http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-40UB8000# )

Key specs for those of you looking at the price, November 27, 2014

Context: My friend showed me this tv after I was set on buying the Samsung UN55HU7250. I’m looking to future-proof my TV purchase without breaking the bank.

While this television does technically support 4K, the color depth is 8 bit and the chroma sampling is 4 : 2 : 0 when displaying that resolution. This may explain why LG calls its HDMI port “HDMI 4K @ 60hz” instead of HDMI 2.0.

You can find this information in the manual on page 23 on LG’s website for this product.

Seems like LG is really blurring HDMI 2.0 support. I asked an online rep if LG supports HDMI 2.0 and they also said that LG currently doesn’t support it.

The specs for Samsung are much more detailed and while they also don’t explicitly state they support HDMI 2.0, their 4K resolution supports 4:4:4 chroma sampling. So I’m sticking to the Samsung.
