got these as a gift from my friend. Im no audiophile but i can say these are the best headphones I have ever listened to. I own sennheiser 595s and a pair of bose qc2 for work. My only gripe is the comfort, i really don’t enjoy the velvet “on-ear” feel of the headphones, and they cause my ears to hurt after about 3 hours. Other than that though i can say these are a very attractive looking great sounding set of headphones.

Let me get started by saying that i have gone through enough pairs of headphones to know what sounds good and what does not. I have had sonys, beats, sennheisers, boses, skullcandys, shures, and those god awful ipod earbuds. Anyone who is comparing these to the beats or boses has no idea what they’re talking about. The beats are created in part by a rapper (who can make awesome songs) but with no knowledge of advanced sound engineering and a company that prides itself on selling audio cables at 4 times their competitors prices which have been proven by high school physics class to work identically to a unwound coat hanger. Why do they sound “good” then? because the bass is highly exaggerated and the closed port design allows for good isolation. They are a fashion accessory and more of an acoustic parlor trick than real audio equipment. bose’s cans do exactly the same thing as the beats, but are marketed to wealthy business travelers instead of aspiring rappers. As a general rule of thumb, look at how marketed the brand is; companies have a set budget, some of this will go to headphone manufacturing and development and some will go to marketing and product placement. If a company spends lots of money on marketing and product placement, guess what they are spending less on: the actual headphones.
The sound quality of these is absolutely amazing, the closest thing i have heard is my old sennheiser hd 555’s, which these blew out of the water for a fraction of the price although the sennheisers were more comfortable. The bass response is perfect in my opinion, it doesnt muddy up or overpower any mids or highs and is accurate yet powerful, this is due to the semi open construction, a highly underrated design. The mids and highs are incredibly crisp, and the instrument separation is nothing short of awesome, its like having a whole new music library.
Are they portable? not really, They leak sound but not as bad as you might think with the design and driver size, you could definitely get away with listening to them in an office setting without your coworkers making fun of your music selection. Are they comfortable? yeah, its not the tempur pedic of headphones, but i like the velvet pads and they do not make my ears sore even after hours, everyone’s head is different though. Are they made well? yes, for under 100 dollar near studio monitor quality headphones, no one should expect an italian leather headband and inch thick aluminum earcups. they are solid, and look great. enough said.
As for them being made in China, everything is made in china. If they are fake, the manufacturers would be much better off establishing their own brand to compete with akg than just making fake akgs. seriously, it would be like rolex making fake omega watches instead of making rolexes.
I recommend these to anyone, regardless of music preference, contrary to popular opinion. I love rap and hard rock as well as classical and acoustic and the assumption that you need unrealistic, oversimplified, kicked up bass to listen to rap is absurd. These headphones sound true to what the artist intended, and i think they sound great with rap, the bass lines are much more defined and still have a nice kick, but it wont sound like you have a car subwoofer in your ear (a good thing in my opinion).

I just purchased these headphones after an old pair of HD 280 pro Senn’s broke for good.

I was excited to go for these akg’s because they were well regarded, and appeared to be well built.
When they arrived, I was disappointed with the cheap vinyl of the headband and the plastic parts. They haven’t broken yet, but I have a bad feeling about them, and to be honest, when paying a little more for headphones, I don’t want a molded vinyl headband.

That said, they sound great, and after the closed hd 280’s, these sound really clear and clean. They are also lightweight, which is good, and I suspect that’s the reason the materials I take issue with were chosen…

So overall, sound quality: 5 stars. Construction quality: 3 stars.

I’ll keep them and report back if they do come apart.
