Spendid quality in a truely pocketable camera., January 14, 2014

As much as I love my big cameras, I can’t really carry any of them with me 24/7…and that’s where the little Panasonic LX5 used to come in. The main problem was that it was not exactly “pocketable” (even less so with the EVF attached) but more of a “big coat pocket camera”. My venerable LX5 had seen a lot of use and was getting a bit long-in-the-tooth. I’d been looking for a replacement and had been looking carefully at the Panasonic LX7 and, when it was introduced a few months ago, the Panasonic LF1. At the time, the most striking thing about the LF1 was the reach it had for something that size – 28mm-200mm (full-frame equivalent)!

When Leica announced their version of the LF1 recently for a reasonable $200 mark-up, it was a no-brainer as the body style was much nicer and I needed another copy of Lightroom 5 (which is normally about $150 by itself). Plus, I preferred a warranty through Leica rather than Panasonic as they’ve been so very helpful over the years with my M8, M9 and M lenses, often going that extra mile for me.

I’ve been absolutely loving the C! In my opinion it is certainly a step up from the LX5 in terms of telephoto reach and photo quality. It’s no M9 obviously but, turned off with its lens collapsed, it is exceedingly tiny and really can live in my pants pocket 24/7. Being able to tether it to a tablet or phone is also a welcome bit of utility.

I love the macro capabilities, the decent low-light ability, the RAW file capability and the presence of a EVF on something this tiny. For what it’s worth, the EVF won’t win any prizes but it certainly does the job in bright light and that’s all I need it for.

This is a camera that you can always have with you and it’s capable of stunning, high quality images, especially if you shoot in RAW format.

Excellent point and shoot if price was not a factor. It is a rebranded Panasonic, but comes with Lightroom, so about $100 of the markup is for the nicer design. I’m not sure if the nicer looking design is worth that to everyone, but it was to me.
Images are not too bad, though for the same price range, there are better options in terms of image quality (RX100m3 is about $100 more).
    update:
Video quality/stabilization is surprisingly good, even in low light. Stereo sound is crisp. Shot videos at John Legend concert, had very good results.

. The Leica C doesn’t disappoint with clear crisp images that can be shot in a wide range of settings. I would consider myself a rapidly improving amateur photographer and wanted a pocket camera to take on several upoming trips to the mountains where there would be plenty of sunlight. As this was one of the few pocket cameras with a viewfinder, I paid the premium for the Leica over the comparable Lumix model (now discontinued)and it was still $100 less than Sony’s RX100 MIII.
I’ve used the camera for everything from detailed product photography to candid photos at parties and my only complaint is the control on the flash which tends to overpower an subject closer than 4-5 ft away. Perhaps the flash is less to blame as my technique becomes more adaptable to various lighting. The only other drawback: I’ve also found the power switch to be easily triggered when handling the camera as it is recessed on one of the few uncluttered flat surfaces on the top of the camera. When grabbing the camera by the top and bottom to remove it from a pocket or case, care must be taken to avoid deploying the switch which at the same time, extends the lens.
My likes far outweigh the dislikes though, and I’m thrilled with the WiFi capabilities of remote operation and file share with my iPhone and Tablet. Processing RAW images using the included Lightroom 5 software download is an added bonus. Start up is fast and the optical zoom makes it the perfect companion for hiking and nature photography when you don’t want to haul a DSLR with a big lens. While bringing such a small camera into the field makes perfect sense, you’ll rarely miss having a larger camera. This camera has lots of sophistication to please the advanced photographer while being small and aesthetically attractive.
