Buyer Beware!!! DJI: Nominated for World’s Worst customer service and repair., July 5, 2015
    By
    David (Pennington, NJ) –

This review is from: DJI Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4K UHD Video Camera Drone (Electronics)

Prospective owners, please read! DJI has an awesome product with the worst customer service and repair of any company I have ever dealt with in any line of consumer product.

The Phantom 3 Professional is an unbelievable piece of technology, I preordered this item in April and received it on May 6th. The first week, I played with the drone a little indoors (stable easy flight), and outside my house just to make sure it was operating properly. The only complaint I had to this point was that it took a good bit of futzing around (and more than an hour) to get the firmware between the app, remote control and onboard the drone all in sync, and that they seem to be pushing new firmware all the time (I like the fact that new software is coming out, but if it is going to be that frequent, the process for applying it should be a little less convoluted). Everything else was brilliant.

The weather was going to be great that weekend, so we planned on a maiden voyage down to the Delaware River. The drone performed spectacularly. The video was amazing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr-w7bJbVhY), as a matter of fact, everything about the Phantom 3 was as advertised. The distance, control, stability, camera quality, all exceptional.

At the end of this first flight, I was flying by sight and accidentally ran into a tree (you can see this on the video). Again, the drone was fantastic, it survived a bouncy 50ft fall to the ground with hardly any damage. As a matter of fact, I was immediately able to fly it again. Only problem was there was a very small externally affixed ribbon cable on the camera gimbal that was torn during the fall. I was able to fly the drone and see through the camera, but unable to move the camera.

On Monday May 11th, I contacted DJI to inquire how I could purchase the replacement part for this ribbon cable. They informed me next day that “The issues that you’re describing require for you to send in your unit for repair.” I assumed this was a mistake, and all I needed to do was call someone and explain the situation… i.e. Drone flying fine, camera working, but immovable with an obvious needed replacement of a small torn cable.

I called customer service the following day (May 12th) After hours on the phone with the customer service agent, this was the result:

    1. They would not sell me a replacement ribbon cable and let me install it myself
    2. They could not tell me what it would cost to replace the cable if I sent it to them
    3. They could not tell me how long it would take to replace the cable (only that repairs normally took 6 weeks!!!!!) yes six weeks
    4. I could not just send in the camera and have them fix that, I had to send the whole drone (even though is was still flying fine). This is hugely important, because it meant that even though the camera is designed to be removed and reattached (DJI even providing additional washers to do so in the shipping package) that I would have to pay to ship the entire 10lb drone to them, vs. just the light weight camera costing me $50 for shipping ground (5-7 days time) instead $10-15 to ship the camera to them via 2-day shipping
    5. I asked to speak to a customer service supervisor multiple times and was told that they will not speak to me over this issue.

I was really upset and took to twitter: https://twitter.com/DJIGlobal/status/598322752446078976

After exhausting every mechanism I could find to try and talk to someone reasonable at DJI, I finally broke down and shipped the entire unit to them on May 22nd. Although Fedex delivered the package to them 6 days later on May 28th, DJI did not officially “receive” the package into their system until June 5th. (2 weeks after it was shipped).

Since that time it has been a black hole. According to DJI CS, a technician should have looked at the drone and developed a repair estimate “about two weeks after they get it” (well that would have been June 20th). I wrote them on June 24th to request a status and was sent a form letter explaining that “If you call in or email for a status update before the end of the 6th week, the customer service representative will not be able to provide any further update”. This means that I can not enquire as to the status of my $1,300 drone until July 17th (even though it is supposed to be complete by Julty 17th…)

Can anyone think of any product in any category that has a more draconian and horrible repair process? There is absolutely no way that you could possibly think about running an aerial photography business using DJI products. You would be forced into the position of purchasing multiple drones in case one has a problem, what photography business could afford to be without its camera for 2 months every-time something went wrong with it?

Imagine: Oh, your tripod broke? please send in your entire…

I’m still stunned. Love the flying, love the camera & gimbal., May 11, 2015

It’s still early, but my impressions are really quite gleaming for this little fella. My first few flights have been remarkably stable and intuitive. I’m new to flying, but the phantom 3 and the app are really great even if you’re a newbie.

Here are my current thoughts and considerations:

-Price point considering the gimbal and camera are excellent
-Stability even in fair gusts of wind is better than i imagined
-Gimbal is remarkable, the first flight it was wonky, but from then on its been great, can achieve ‘locked off’ type shots (crazy impressive)
-Battery life is decent, same as other copters, get extra batteries!
-Camera quality is on par with gopro, and nearly Zero distortion/fisheye effect
-App is really great, a bit overwhelming at first, but once you digest it it’s great.
-Complete control of the camera through the app and controller, LOVE this
-Really wish it could become more compact for travel, needs its own carryon size case
-Wish the charger was more like a dock.
-Controller has to be recharged, wish it took AA batteries, but thus far it looks like the built in battery is huge and will last lots of hours.
-My droid turbo runs the app like a champ, but really need a bigger tablet with a sunshade

I will update as i continue to fly, i am going all out with a log book of every flight and will be planning lots of visuals and hope to get FAA exemption as i’m a professional videographer and would love to use it commercially. Which is another bit of advice: to date you CANNOT use a copter for commercial purposes without FAA exemption. As a hobby under 400′ is OK in the USA, but still be safe and don’t go messing it up for the rest of us by flying over bridges and the white house, bad mojo.

    UPDATE 5/20/15:
Several flights more and things are still excellent. Finding more and more functionality within the app. The ability to set height and distance restrictions is super useful. The app does have a way of working that can be annoying at first, such as how to expand/close windows.

Two quirks thus far: The app appears to remain running on my phone even after exiting, and runs down my battery. Have to force close it. Also, i did a full power down between flights, and the app opened up to a frozen screen when i booted back up, and had to again be force stopped and then it ran fine when i booted it back up. My plan is to buy a samsung tab 4 to take over for it.

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: DJI Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4K UHD Video Camera Drone (Electronics)
While this is not my first drone I ordered, it is the first to arrive (my others are Kickstarter and Indiegogo units, so they are in development).

The features that sold me to buy a 3rd unit (!!) before having any was the camera (linear rather than curved field), 12MPix images 4K video, and other camera features (AE bracket, AE Lock etc.). And, the built-in long-range (1.2 miles) ability (some have reported up to 3 miles). I actually don’t intend to use it that far, being a chicken (Don’t want to lose it!)… but that means for a few hundred to 1000 feet, it should never lose connection.

Unpacking was a drag – they put plastic sheeting over almost everything, even the props. It took some time to carefully cut it off. I guess they want it to arrive in pristine condition… :) The next thing I did was download the app, at which point I discovered a message that I had to update the firmware. I downloaded it, read the instructions, but had some confusion about the sounds that would be generated to tell me the status of an update. Consequently, I sat there for 20 minutes waiting for it to complete, and finally gave up, only to discover it completed many minutes ago, I just did not understand the “D..D..D..D” and “DDD..D” terminology (that is their way of explaining “morse code” buzzing from the camera).

You use the same download file to also update the transmitter, and then put it back in the Phantom to update the battery. Once that was done, I explored the interface and set about reading the manuals and getting ready for my “maiden flight.”

The manual that shipped with my unit was fairly brief, but fortunately the app gives you access to a much more complete version (touch “help”). It took me a few hours to read all of the stuff (highly recommended before your first flight). I could not find some of the features in the software, however. Specifically, the camera modes (burst auto exposure bracket, timer etc.). And, for some reason, my camera was stuck in EV +1.7 rather than EV 0. In other words, always overexposing. I took my maiden flight anyway. It was scary: I flew it behind a tree and freaked out. I was able to recover without hitting the tree. It is hard to judge distance without 3D… :)

I did not understand that if you start the motors, the take-off icon goes away (and is replaced by land). It turns out that takeoff will start the motors for you. Takeoff and landing worked great! Stability is fantastic! It just hovers if you take your hands off the controls.

For me, going sideways or backwards is not an option (unless I am above the trees). Travel can be fast, so be caareful not to go so fast that your reaction time is too long to prevent a crash! No crashed yet (although I did drop the Phantom down the stairs by mistake, cutting my finger on a propeller, and without damage… OOPS!). Stairs had carpet, but still, it handled the fall without incident. Whew!

I contacted support about the EV problem, but before they responded, I tried “camera reset” and that fixed the EV problem. I contacted them again to explain better what the problem was (the manuals could certainly have even more info in them), because I have no idea how the problem occurred. I also asked them where the missing camera features were. Turns out you get them by holding down on the shutter button. Who woulda known?

Other than wishing for a more complete manual (actually, for a Chinese company”s manual, it is quite good and in real English), the 3 Pro performs very well.

On my 2nd flight, with the camera working correctly I took my first shots of my neighborhood. I then processed them using Intensify Pro and Noiseless, two apps on my Mac I use for most of my imaging work (along with Photoshop). The images are excellentt!

i only wish for more pixels and a zoom lens… :)

If you are a photographer or a videographer, this is the best yet. The video is so smooth yuo woud not think it was a drone. Rock solid!

    Bravo, DJI!

Update: I can’t stress enough that the stability is amazing. I got to fly my neighbor’s Phantom 2 Vision+ yesterday (and watch him fly it) and it was … difficult – due to drift. I managed to run into a tree, and he also almost lost control. Lost one prop (unit is undamaged). And the pilot app on the Vision+ is very limited compared to the Phantom 3. In fact, my neighbor is now selling his Phantom 2 set so he can buy a Phantom 3… It’s like a completely different product, with so much improvement it is truly amazing! Attached is a photo I took (Note: it was adjusted to my liking with Intensify Pro and Noiseless).
