I bought this to replace an Apple Airport Express that I was using to stream music via Airplay from my iPhone/iPad. The improvement in sound quality compared to the Airport Express was unbelievable. Even my wife noticed and complemented the sound (and she’s no Audiophile). One minor difference in functionality is that you could control the volume from the iPhone with the Airport Express but the N30 does not respond to volume controls so you have make adjustments to volume at the receiver/preamp.

I looked forward to having a way to play my HD FLAC files from my music server on my home audio system. I have been using an Audiotron (an ancient Turtle Beach device, well ahead of its time, but now not supported, and only handles MP3 files). I hoped the pioneer system would adequately replace it, and add FLAC capability. It does not replace the Audiotron in terms of functionality for the following simple reason: It does not handle .m3u or other playlist files. The control app isn’t much help. I can select a file or album from my phone instead of on the device itself – big deal. The “Air Jam” plays only files from the ‘phone (how many FLAC files can you fit on your phone?) A simple ability to create playlists and/or use .m3u files would make this a 5-star choice.
The audio quality of the device is superb. The sound is crystal clear from the HD FLAC files, and there is a real audible difference between a 176/24 FLAC and a 156 MP3 (although I don’t hear much difference between an HD FLAC and a 320 MP3.) The quality of sound, and the excellent internet-station features keep me from sending this back. But it could be a lot better with just a little feature addition.

No more CD player. Just rip all your CDs and store flac files on your external hard drive. You can listen CD quality musics using USB thumb drive or over the network using this network player. I used to play high resolution flac files through Audirvana+ on mac mini > AMR DP-777 tube DAC USB async input > ATC SCM20 active speakers and now I play all the music files from mac mini server -> ethernet -> N-30 > AMR DP-777 tube DAC SPDIF coaxial input > ATC speakers. I think the overall sound is a bit more refined then before. Plus it is way more convenient to control everything using either my iphone or ipad. I have not checked the analog output of the player as I do have fairly highend DAC, but think it should be quite good as well as it has very good DAC chip inside. Very highly recommended!!!!
